Saath Community Network: Breast Cancer Survivor Focus Group (register by July 22)

Dear Saath team and collaborators,

Please disseminate as widely as possible.

We are looking for breast cancer survivors to help develop a booklet for patients to talk to their doctors about non-medical, complementary therapies that people have found useful. Your opinion and ideas are important to ensure that this booklet will really be helpful to breast cancer patients and survivors, and to ensure that it will be something patients will want to read.

Please join us Saturday morning, July 24, 2010, to participate in a two-hour Breast Cancer Survivors Focus Group from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Then stay to have lunch with us from noon until 1:00 p.m. In appreciation for your participation and time, each breast cancer survivor participant will receive a $40 gift card to Target, and a gift bag. Parking and lunch are free.

Saath Community Network: American Diabetes Association - South Asian Diabetes Needs Assessment Survey

Dear Saath team and collaborators, please read on for a message from the American Diabetes Association:

A few weeks ago, you received an email from the American Diabetes Association, asking for your help in the dissemination of a survey to South Asian Americans living with type 2 diabetes. Our survey is now live and we continue to ask for your assistance in promoting this survey to your constituents.

We are commited to developing a program that will best meet the needs of South Asian Americans living with type 2 diabetes. However, in order to do so, we need to learn what the community feels they need.

If you could help spread the word about this survey, we would greatly appreciate it. There are several ways you can help distribute the survey.

1. Forward the link to the survey to both your professional and personal networks. www.diabetes.org/southasian
2. Include the provided text in your e-newsletter to your constituents or promote it on your website.
3. Print out the attached flier and post it on a bulletin board where people would see it. If you prefer, we can mail you copies of the flier.

Your assistance in spreading the word about this survey will help the American Diabetes Association develop a program that meets the needs of South Asian Americans living with type 2 diabetes and help improve their quality of life.

Saath Community Network: UCLA and Saath DVD Project for South Asian Breast Cancer Survivors

Dear Saath supporters,

We are looking for extras to act in another DVD project that is designed to help women diagnosed with breast cancer. This project is being developed in collaboration with researchers at UCLA's Jonsson Cancer Center. It will add to our existing DVD that we just completed designed to get women into cancer screening programs so their cancer is detected early. This was our "photonovella" project.

We are looking for a few volunteers to play "extras" in this DVD project, particularly people in their 40s and 50s. Please confirm if you can particate by emailing saathucla@gmail.com. if you are able to attend and we will provide the location to you. The fillming will start at 9am and end at 9pm on June 13 (Sunday).

Saath Community Network: What is a Census Taker?

Open the door to a census taker and open doors for your community.

By being counted you are standing up for what your community's needs are. That's why census takers are so important. A census taker is a person from your community who is hired by the Census Bureau to make sure that your neighborhood gets represented as accurately as possible. The census taker's primary responsibility is to collect census information from residences. Most of these residences have not sent back their 2010 Census form.

* The Census Bureau provides the census taker with a binder containing all of the addresses that didn't send back a filled out census form.
* The census taker then visits all of those addresses and records the answers to the questions on the form.
* If no one answers at a particular residence, a census taker will visit a home up to three times and attempt to reach the household by phone three times. The census worker will leave a double-sided (English and Spanish) NOTICE of VISIT in the doorway that includes a phone number for the resident to schedule an appointment.

The census taker will ONLY ask the questions that appear on the census form.

Do I have to talk to the census taker?

Yes. Your participation in the 2010 Census is vital and required by law, (Section 221, of Title 13 of the U.S. Code). However, rather than rely on criminal charges, the Census Bureau is very successful in getting participation by explaining the importance of the questions we ask and how the information benefits our communities.

Your privacy and confidentiality is our priority:

The census taker who collects your information is sworn for life to protect your data under Federal Law Title 13. Those who violate the oath face criminal penalties: Under federal law, the penalty for unlawful disclosure is a fine of up to $250,000 or imprisonment for up to 5 years, or both.
